Not many valley wineries invite the general public in for private
picnicking. All too often, they fear that visitors will leave
rubbish behind and make more work than the exposure to their
wines is worth.
Which is why we applaud wineries such as Cuvaison, Clos du Val,
and Rutherford Hill for inviting strangers in to picnic on their
grounds.
Recently, though, we found the Mother of All Picnic Sites in
the valley and have to award Chappellet for maintaining a gorgeous
knoll for visitors who wish to spend a few quiet moments away
from the whirring cash registers of valley tasting rooms.
This picnic knoll is so contemplative, so serene, that Buddhists
would feel comfortable holding a meditation session here.
Some 800 feet off the valley floor, overlooking Lake Hennessey
and a goodly stretch of Napa Valley in the far, far distance,
you can enjoy victuals that you have brought along. You are
sitting beneath a canopy of stately, tall conifers, the knoll
is shaded with dappled light, and your pooch, or your kids,
can run freely without concern.
Reservations to Napa Valley’s Best Winery Picnic Site
are essential. Call Chappellet to book: 707-963-7136. There
is a $25 per person charge for use of the grounds, but with
this, you get glassware and sufficient wine to amuse you and
the friends you have chosen to bring along.
