In a world of Wal-Marts and cookie-cutter Safeway stores, it's important to support the family-owned, "independent grocery store." Like the one-of-a-kind Sunshines in St. Helena (in the strip mall next to Ben Franklin and Wells Fargo.)
The fact is: this is a GREAT little grocery store. Shopping here is a pleasure, not a duty.
Mike and Jay Smith stock their store with as much of the good stuff as their 10,000 square-feet will hold. Lots of organic vegetables and produce; premium-quality meats and poultry, and we love the house-roasted, fresh turkey, which is sliced for sandwiches (they prepare some 500 sandwiches a day for take-out).
The store offers fresh, made-in-store-daily sushi; the wine aisle runs the length of the store, representing Mike's personal tastes and features a wide selection of local wines.
Don't miss: Sunshines sells the best non-fat yogurt made in North America Nancy's brand, from the Springfield Creamery in Eugene, Oregon (so rich and creamy that it tastes like sour cream yet has NO fat and NO pectins or any of those goofy stabilizers and emulsifiers that the national brands incorporate into their commercial, pudding-like, yogurt products).
Sunshine Foods, 1115 Main St., St. Helena. 707-963-7070.
