Yes, we love the art at Clos Pegase and at The Hess Collection Winery at the north and south ends of Napa Valley respectively, but for sheer size, ambition and vision, COPIA gets our nod for the best Wine/Food/Art experience you can have in Napa Valley.
Kicked off with a generous donation from Robert and Margrit Biever Mondavi, COPIA raised $55 million to construct a one-of-a-kind institution in the world. The place celebrates the best in wine, food and the arts and attempts, in a cultural and educational way, to show how the three disciplines are interrelated.
There are organic gardens and a seriously good dining room, Julia's Kitchen; there are changing art exhibits, which may be sculptural or photographic in nature, but they may also be collections of things as quirky and colorful as teapots; there are classes, wine tastings, cooking demos. And the gift shop is one of our favorite places to stop to purchase hostess, or birthday, gifts.
COPIA, 500 First St. Napa. Winter hours, open 10-5 daily, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. 707-259-1600 or 1-888-51-COPIA.
